This chocolate chip cookie with butter flavored shortening recipe is the chocolate chip cookie recipe my mom would make when I was younger.

Honestly, I don't think my mom ever made another chocolate chip cookie recipe.

She got the recipe off the back of a Butter Flavored Crisco container. (Doesn't that just scream the fact that I grew up in the late eighties/early nineties?) The recipe was called the "Ultimate Chocolate Chip Cookies." My mom made some slight adjustments though, like leaving out the chopped pecans.

Generally, I don't use Crisco or other shortening when I cook. However, you can't deny that Butter Flavored Crisco in chocolate chip cookies is tasty!

Some of my favorite desserts are key lime pie and sopapilla cheesecake, but I always LOVE a classic softy and chewy chocolate chip cookie.

The addition of the butter flavored shortening, such as Crisco, helps the chocolate chip cookies stay soft and chewy. My mom also used to freeze the chocolate chip cookies to save for a later date.

Why you’ll love this recipe

  • The cookies taste like classic chocolate chip cookies.
  • The addition of the butter flavored Crisco helps keep the chocolate chip cookies soft and moist.
  • You can freeze the cookies for later. The chocolate chip cookies can be frozen to serve later. Just bake the cookies as instructed and then freeze in a sealed plastic bag after they have cooled.

Recipe Ingredients

  • Butter flavored shortening (such as Crisco)
  • Brown sugar
  • Milk
  • Vanilla extract
  • Egg
  • Flour
  • Salt
  • Baking soda
  • Semi-sweet chocolate chips

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I substitute butter for butter flavored shortening?

It appears that you can substitute butter for butter flavored shortening. It is a one-to-one ratio. For example, you would use 1 cup of butter to 1 cup of shortening. I have never tried to substitute butter in place of butter flavored shortening though.

Do cookies taste better with butter or shortening?

Cookies made with shortening instead of butter tend to be softer and fluffier. Regular butter adds flavor to cookies, but it tends to make the cookies flatter when baked. Using butter flavored shortening creates the best of both worlds.

Storage & Reheating:

  • Storage: Store the chocolate chip cookies in an air-tight container for up to 5 days.
  • Freezing: The chocolate chip cookies can be stored in the freezer. Follow the recipe and allow the cookies to completely cool before freezing any extra in a sealed plastic bag.

Additions and Substitutions

SUBSTITUTIONS

Regular shortening: You do not have to use butter flavored shortening. Non-flavored shortening will work too. The texture will be the same, but the flavor may be slightly different.

Milk chocolate chips or M&Ms: This recipe calls for semi-sweet chocolate chips, but milk chocolate chips could be used as well. You could even use M&Ms instead of chocolate chips.

ADDITIONS

Nuts: In the original "Ultimate Chocolate Chip Cookies" recipe that Crisco released, 1 cup of coarsely chipped pecans was included in the recipe. My siblings and I didn't like nuts when we were younger so my mom would leave this out.
