Molasses Milk (Dairy-Free, AIP, Paleo)

November 1, 2024 by Lauren Leave a Comment

Molasses milk is a rich and creamy drink that is usually served warm, but it can also be served over ice. This easy warm milk recipe is dairy-free since it uses coconut milk instead of regular milk, which keeps it AIP (Autoimmune Protocol Diet) and Paleo compliant. The blackstrap molasses adds key nutrients like iron, calcium, and potassium, but it also has a slightly bittersweet, licorice-like flavor.

When I started the AIP diet to help with my autoimmune symptoms, I began looking for AIP and Paleo drinks. Since the AIP diet is very restrictive, I wasn't sure what options would be available. I stumbled across this molasses milk recipe that uses coconut milk as a base. It has a cozy, creamy feel - I love that it's a perfect drink for winding down in the evening or sipping on chilly fall mornings. I like to add a sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg to really bring out the flavors of fall.

What is blackstrap molasses?

I hadn’t used blackstrap molasses before starting the Paleo Autoimmune Protocol Diet, but it’s a Paleo and AIP-friendly sweetener with plenty of health benefits. I now always keep a jar of it in my pantry!

Unlike refined sugar, blackstrap molasses goes through multiple rounds of cooking, which concentrates its nutrients and takes out a lot of the sugar content. It’s rich in iron, calcium, potassium, and even antioxidants, but has far less sugar than other types of molasses. I've read that some people even swear by it for specific needs—especially women, as the iron can supposedly help relieve menstrual cramps and fight fatigue.

For an AIP-friendly version, I use coconut milk. Almond milk could work too, but for anyone on an AIP diet or avoiding nuts, coconut milk is a delicious, creamy milk-alternative option. The result is a nutrient-packed drink that’s perfect for sipping warm in the fall or served over ice in the summer. It is one of my favorite year-round Paleo and AIP-complaint drinks since it can be served hot or cold.

Warm or cold molasses milk is also kid-approved! My boys love molasses milk. It's great for kids since blackstrap molasses has healthy nutrients and vitamins. And, believe me, it's easier to get them to drink molasses milk than for them to down a spoonful of thick blackstrap molasses by itself.

Ingredients for Molasses Milk

Molasses milk is such a simple drink to make—it only requires two ingredients!

  • Coconut milk: I like to use lite coconut milk from a carton. Check to make sure it has minimal added ingredients. Ideally it would contain just coconut milk and water.
  • Blackstrap molasses: Be sure to use blackstrap molasses (not light or dark), as it has the most nutrients and is the only AIP and Paleo approved molasses sweetener. It’s often available at health food stores or online.

How to Make

In a small saucepan, heat the coconut milk and molasses over medium heat.

Whisk until the mixture is steaming, then pour it into a mug if serving warm or pour over ice if serving cold.
