How to Make Perfect Hard Boiled Eggs that Peel Easy

March 1, 2023 by Lauren Leave a Comment

I've spent a large amount of my adult life trying to figure out how to make perfect hard boiled eggs that peel easily EVERY time. I can say I've finally learned the hack of how to make hard boiled eggs that are always easy to peel!

You can also learn how to make perfect hard boiled eggs so that they're easy to peel. It is a must-know cooking techniques, especially when making recipes like Bloody Mary Deviled Eggs or the viral Egg Boil Recipe from TikTok.

Hard boiled eggs are a great addition to a lot of meals. I like to eat hard boiled eggs for breakfast since they are easy to eat on-the-go.

I also frequently put hard boiled eggs in a salad for extra protein. I've even been known to eat a hard boiled egg before a workout or even before bed! Of course, deviled eggs are one of the main hard boiled egg recipes that frequent holiday dinner tables and summer parties.

There is almost nothing worse than trying to peel a stubborn hard boiled egg. When you have a stubborn hard boiled egg, chunks of the egg get pulled off and you end up destroying the egg. The shell is latching on for dear life.

Eggs with divots and chunks taken out can make deviled eggs look awful. So how do you make perfect hard boiled eggs so that they are easy to peel EVERY time?

How do you get boiled eggs to peel easily?

The biggest hack for making easy peel hard boiled eggs is to boil a large pan of water before adding the eggs. If you place the eggs into a cold pan of water and then boil the water, you won't be able to consistently boil eggs so that they peel easily.

The secret hack for making easy peel hard boiled eggs is all about the water temperature when the eggs are submerged in the pan.

Steps to Make Perfect + Easy Peel Hard Boiled Eggs

Here are the specific steps I use to make perfect hard boiled eggs that peel easily EVERY time:

  1. Boil water. As I mentioned before, boiling water before adding the eggs is the main hack in achieving easy peel hard boiled eggs. Use a medium sized pot. Fill the pot about three-fourths of the way full. Make sure the eggs will be fully submerged with an inch or two of water above the eggs. Heat the water on medium-high heat until the water reaches a rolling boil.
  2. Add the eggs. Turn the stove temperature down or off so the water stops boiling. This is to prevent the eggs from cracking when dropping them into the water. Carefully place each egg into the water. I use tongs to gently place each egg into the water. Once all the eggs are placed into the pan, turn the temperature back to medium high. Bring the water back to a boil again.
  3. Cook the eggs. Do you prefer your hard boiled eggs to have a firm middle? Or do you prefer a soft and runny yolk (also called soft boiled eggs)? You need to find the appropriate cooking time that corresponds to how you like your hard boiled eggs cooked.
  4. Move the eggs to an ice bath. Fill a large bowl with a mix of ice and water. The water should be frigid so the eggs can cool down enough to stop cooking. This helps them remain at your desired consistency. Keep the eggs in the ice bath for about 10-15 minutes.

You've successfully made perfect hard boiled eggs that peel easily every time. Now here is the test to see if the hard boiled eggs are actually easy to peel!

How to Peel Hard Boiled Eggs

How do you peel an egg without it sticking to the shell? First of all, you must follow the steps I mentioned above. Then, follow these steps:

  1. First, lightly tap the egg on a countertop to begin a series of cracks.
  2. Slide your fingers under the shell. Gently begin to remove the shell from the cooked egg.
  3. After all the shell pieces are removed, quickly rinse the egg off in water to remove any tiny egg shell remnants.

Why is my hard-boiled egg hard to peel?

Do you want to know what I've found when it comes to how to peel hard boiled eggs without tearing them up? It has nothing to do with your method for peeling the hard boiled egg - it has everything to do with whether or not you placed the eggs in the pot of water before or after the water had started to boil!

Follow the steps above to make perfect, easy-to-peel hard boiled eggs. Some easy-to-peel hard boil egg recipes say to add vinegar or baking soda to the pot of water, but I've never found that these "hacks" helped.

How long can you store hard boiled eggs?

I personally do not like the texture of hard boiled eggs after they are a couple days old. I try to eat hard boiled eggs within the day or two after I cooked them. However, you can keep hard boiled eggs with the shell on for up to a week in the refrigerator.
