Is Aldi sauerkraut fermented?
Yes, the Aldi sauerkraut by Deutsche Kuche is fermented since sauerkraut is fermented cabbage. However, Aldi sauerkraut does not have probiotics even though it is technically a fermented food. Store-bought sauerkraut that is found in a jar or can that is sitting in an aisle rather than in a refrigerated section does not contain live probiotics. Typically jars or cans that are shelf-stable at room temperature are pasteurized. Pasteurization results in eliminating bacteria (both good and bad) since the food item is heated to a high temperature - thus removing the most important health benefit of eating a "fermented" food.
Does canned sauerkraut have live probiotics?
No, canned or jarred sauerkraut that is kept at room temperature when it is purchased does not have live probiotics. Both good and bad bacteria are destroyed during the pasteurization and canning process. If the sauerkraut was refrigerated at purchase then it is likely that it has live probiotics. Aldi does carry refrigerated sauerkraut as a Special Buy item throughout the year. However, the jarred Deutsche Kuche German Style Sauerkraut does not have probiotics.
Is Deutsche Kuche German Style Sauerkraut pasteurized?
Yes, Deutsche Kuch German Style Sauerkraut is pasteurized. The telltale sign that it is pasteurized is that it is not found in the refrigerated area at Aldi. It is found in the aisle of canned goods. To be shelf-stable, the food items have to be pasteurized to kill off any bad bacteria. This also results in killing any probiotics ("good" bacteria).

WHY isn't there a LINK as to WHERE you can purchase these ONLINE, incase you are not near a store that carries these.
I typed in UNSERE into the Amazon search bar and NOTHING came up

Hi Barbara - This blog is not affiliated with Aldi, but Aldi does not sell items on its website. Sometimes Amazon will have Aldi products for purchase, but that is dependent on if Amazon sellers feel like they can make a profit from selling Aldi products on the Amazon website. I hope this helps in some way.

In what country is your German style sauerkraut made? It should be a source of pride for the makers of it. Why not tell the consumer where it’s made.

I found pieces of wood in my jar of sauerkraut.

Oh no! I've never had that happen before.
